‘ATTACK ON HEALTH PROFESSIONALS UNACCEPTABLE REGARDLESS’ – Health Minister, Akandoh Condemns Ridge Incident
Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has strongly condemned the recent assault on a nurse at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital).
The Ghana Police Service was called in by hospital administrators to restore order after the disturbance, which started with reported delays in treating a severely injured patient, turned into verbal abuse and physical aggressiveness toward a nurse.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, August 21, the Minister emphasized that no situation justifies attacking medical personnel and called the behavior intolerable.
“Let me at this point reiterate to the whole country, that irrespective of the level of provocation at any health facility in this country, nobody, irrespective of your status in society, absolutely nobody has the right to attack any health professional in this country. That is what we must concentrate on, to send a clear signal that our health professionals working at the various health facilities are safe,” he stated.
To prevent similar instances from happening again, Mr. Akandoh further stated that the Ministry is reviewing security protocols at all medical facilities.
A committee has been formed to look into the situation, he continued, and some arrests have already been made.
