Ghana coach Otto Addo has explained the reason behind Abdul Baba Rahman’s absence from the Black Stars for almost one year.
The left-back’s most recent appearance for his national team was in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Central African Republic (CAR) in Kumasi in September 2023.
Even though Ghana emerged victorious, Rahman faced criticism from fans at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, with his every move being met with boos and jeers.
The PAOK defender has been performing exceptionally well for his club, but has not been called up to the national team recently following an incident.
Speaking to reporters after revealing his newest team for the Black Stars’ upcoming 2025 AFCON matches versus Angola and Niger, Addo stated that Rahman’s bullying had a negative impact on the player.
He also revealed that he has attempted to persuade the ex-Chelsea player to come back to the national team, but the player continuously declined the offer.
“Players have families and friends and it affects a whole lot of things. They’re all human beings and there should always be a line. I hope that one day Baba will decide to play again [for the Black Stars] but at the moment he doesn’t want to play,” Addo said.
“We would have needed him very much. I had a long talk with him and I even wanted to fly there but he was sure he wouldn’t change his mind.”
