Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the shutdown of the Bonsa Headworks, which supplies 75% of potable water to Tarkwa and its surrounding communities. This decision stems from the adverse impact of illegal mining activities (popularly known as galamsey) on River Bonsa, making it impossible to abstract and treat water effectively.
In an official memo dated January 2, 2025, GWL revealed that despite concerted efforts to resolve the situation, the extent of pollution in the river has left them with no alternative but to cease operations.
“The river is still being monitored for acceptable parameters to enable us to restart production, and until then, the plant remains closed,” stated the District Manager, Wisdom Doe Amponsah, in the memo.
The shutdown poses a significant challenge to the water supply in Tarkwa and neighboring areas, as the Bonsa Headworks has been a critical resource for households and businesses. Residents are expected to face severe water shortages as the company works to address the crisis.
The memo told the public that updates would be provided on any developments regarding the situation. However, it also underscores the growing impact of illegal mining on vital resources in Ghana, with water bodies being the latest casualty.
Authorities and stakeholders are urged to take swift action to combat galamsey activities and prevent further damage to water sources nationwide.
