CANCER KILLED 17,944 GHANAIANS IN 2022 – Report

In 2022, Ghana recorded 17,944 cancer-related deaths and approximately 27,385 new cases, as reported by the Ghana Health Service (GHS), according to GNA.

During a press briefing on Tuesday to commemorate the 2025 World Cancer Day, Acting Director-General of the GHS, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, called the statistics alarming and emphasized the need to strengthen campaigns against prominent male cancers, such as prostate and liver cancer.

He disclosed that liver cancer alone had a shocking 90 percent mortality rate in 2022, with 2,390 fatalities from 2,656 cases. Prostate cancer exhibited a concerning 52 percent death rate, leading to 1,233 fatalities from 2,395 cases.

With more than 70 percent of cancer deaths happening in low- and middle-income nations such as Ghana, where essential services are still hard to come by, Prof Akoriyea emphasized the critical importance of prevention, early detection, and life-saving measures.

“Prevention is the most cost-effective means of ensuring that cancers are controlled. We want to make a special appeal to the media and partners to support us in sensitising the public on healthy diets, physical activity, and vaccination for hepatitis A and B, which have proven to be effective in preventing cancers,” he said.
