Veteran journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has cautioned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over recent public comments, especially his statements on his possible successor.

The president, referring to former president John Dramani Mahama, is known to have declared twice that he would not turn the reins over to someone he had defeated twice in the polls.

Speaking on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at a panel discussion on the Good Morning Ghana show, Pratt took issue with the specific statement stating that the president should not choose his successor.

“… when it comes to determining who takes over from him, that is the preserve of the people of Ghana. So, when he comes and makes statements like, ‘I would not hand over power to so and so,’ it is not only offensive but it amounts to instigating an insurrection,” he said.

He made the argument that Akufo-Addo just has one vote out of millions of voters who would pick the future president.

The managing editor of Insight Newspaper expressed concern that the president’s close advisors appeared unaware of the ramifications of their remarks for both the president and the candidate of the ruling party for the 2024 elections.

“How come those close to him are not drawing his attention to the fact that he is doing a lot of damage to himself, his legacy and the ambitions of his Vice President?” Pratt quizzed.
