CHIEFS WILL BE PART OF LICENSING MINERS WHEN I BECOME PRESIDENT – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced his plan to amend the Minerals Act if he wins the upcoming presidential elections.

He emphasized that the Chiefs would be included in the mineral licensing procedure before any miner could receive a license to operate in a particular area thanks to the proposed modification, which would include their participation.

During his Western Regional campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia made this statement on Thursday when he spoke to the Western Regional House of Chiefs.

He noted that one of the main problems facing the small-scale mining sector is the traditional authorities’ lack of interest in mining licensing.

He suggested changing the Minerals Act to include Chiefs in his formalization program for the mining business in the event that he was elected president.

He stated, “We want to formalise small-scale mining, but we cannot be successful without the participation of Chiefs. The chiefs have to be part of the licensing of miners in their locality. They have to be part of the whole process. And so, we have to make the necessary amendments to the Mining Act to do all of this. Decentralise the Mineral Commission to be in the various districts, decentralise the Environmental Protection Agency.”
