CONTRACTOR RESUMES WORK ON THE POKUASE–NSAWAM HIGHWAY AFTER GOVERNMENT CONFIRMED FULL PAYMENT OF GH¢809 MILLION

Construction crews are back on the Pokuase–Nsawam highway, bringing relief to commuters who had endured weeks of frustration over the abandoned project.

The road, a key route that links Accra with the Eastern and Ashanti regions, had been left in a deplorable state, sparking outrage among drivers, passengers, and transport unions.

Calls for urgent intervention intensified after persistent downpours worsened the already poor condition of the stretch, causing severe gridlocks and hampering economic activity.

This comes after Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei confirmed the release of GH¢809 million to the contractor working on the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway project as of August 4, 2025.

Speaking on Accra-based Peace FM on Monday, August 18, Mr. Agyei clarified that the government had fully discharged its financial obligations for the project.

“We made partial payments on 24th July, followed by another on 30th July, and the final payment was made on 4th August. In total, we have honoured the full amount of GH¢809 million as requested,” he explained.

His announcement comes as contractors return to the site to continue repair works on the vital road, bringing some relief to commuters who have endured weeks of heavy traffic.

The development also aligns with the one-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which was due to expire on Wednesday, August 20.
