“DIVORCE DOESN’T CANCEL MY CALLING” — Selina Boateng Fires Back at Critics
Gospel artiste condemns societal judgment, says broken homes don't break divine purpose; urges support, not ridicule, for those facing marital crises.
Award-winning gospel musician Selina Boateng has issued a powerful response to critics who question the ministry of gospel artistes facing marital breakdowns, asserting that divorce does not nullify one’s divine calling or spiritual authority.
In a candid interview with Graphic Showbiz, the singer, who has been open about her own marital challenges, pushed back against what she describes as a growing and unfair tendency to equate personal struggles with ministerial failure.
“Divorce comes with a lot of issues but I can say boldly that it doesn’t affect our ministry because we are human beings working for God. We are not perfect. The focus is on making an impact on people’s lives,” Selina stated.
She challenged the theological basis of such criticism, noting: “There is no way Gospel musicians cannot minister to people just because they have a broken home. So are they telling me all those who have failed marriages are not going to heaven? It’s not in the Bible that when your marriage ends, you won’t make heaven.”
The vocalist expressed disappointment at society’s tendency to mock rather than support individuals navigating painful separations, emphasizing that divorce often involves complex circumstances beyond an individual’s control.
“No one has the right to judge. Even the Bible frowns on that,” she argued. “You don’t know what triggered the problems they are going through. Divorce can have devastating emotional and psychological effects, yet society chooses to mock and criticise instead of being supportive.”
She called for a more compassionate approach, urging the public to replace judgment with prayer and encouragement: “Are you trying to draw him closer to God or are you pushing that person away? Pray for the one so that God will strengthen the person.”
Selina concluded by reaffirming that her endurance in ministry is by God’s grace, emphasizing that her mission remains focused on touching lives through music rather than seeking human validation.
