EDUCATION MINISTRY ORDERS GES PROBE INTO VIOLENCE AT AGONA SWEDRU SCHOOLS’ ATHLETICS GAMES

Deputy Minister warns perpetrators will face severe sanctions as police launch parallel investigation

The Ministry of Education has condemned, in the strongest terms, acts of violence that erupted during the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru in the Central Region.

In a statement signed by Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, the Ministry described viral videos of the incident as disturbing and unacceptable, directing the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately investigate the matter.

According to the statement, the Director-General has been instructed to convene a meeting with the Central Regional Director of GES, the relevant district directors and the heads of the two schools involved at 10:00am on February 23, 2026, at the GES headquarters in Accra.

“Even as we await the report from the Director-General of the GES, let me state that the Minister for Education and I take a very serious view of these acts of violence. Consequently, the culprits and perpetrators can expect the most severe sanctions,” the statement emphasised.

The directive follows a violent clash that disrupted the inter-schools athletics competition held on February 19 in Agona Swedru.

The Ghana Police Service has also launched an investigation into the incident, which reportedly stemmed from a confrontation between students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).

Eyewitnesses say tensions escalated during the event, resulting in a physical altercation. A student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School was allegedly attacked by a group believed to be from SWESBUS.

The victim was reportedly struck with sticks and pelted with stones before bystanders intervened to restore order. Videos circulating on social media captured chaotic scenes, showing the injured student surrounded by a crowd as the disturbance unfolded.

The student was subsequently rushed to a health facility and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The Ministry of Education has reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and safety within the country’s educational institutions, stressing that inter-school sporting events should promote unity, teamwork and healthy competition not violence.
