Bishop Dag Heward-Mills has voiced a perspective challenging the labeling of polygamy as sinful, asserting that such judgment carries a hypocritical undertone and contradicts the harmony observed in nature.
The distinguished clergyman, serving as the founder and Presiding Bishop of the United Denomination Originating from the Lighthouse Group of Churches, contends that the animal kingdom itself exemplifies polygamous relationships as commonplace. This leads him to question the rationale behind a man’s self-imposed limitation to a solitary partner.
His declarations were delivered during a sermon at the recent Give Thyself Wholly Conference, an assembly attended by pastors and gospel ministers from various corners of the globe.
On the conference’s third day, Bishop Heward-Mills underscored a nuanced perspective, highlighting that the Bible encompasses support for both divorce and polygamy
“Nature even supports polygamy; there is no animal that has only one wife,” he said, quoting 1 Corinthians 11:14 (KJV), which reads: “Doth not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a shame unto him?”
He then proceeded to ask: “Which goat has one wife? Which dog has one wife?”
Further elaborating on his viewpoint, Bishop Heward-Mills expressed astonishment over the paradoxical stance of many revered Christian saints and martyrs who, despite practising polygamy, preach against it.
This thought-provoking observation invites contemplation into the intricate dynamics of historical context and religious interpretation.
“Nobody knows when it became a sin,” he said.
He also touched on divorce, saying the Bible doesn’t frown on it.
He cited the book of Ezra 10:19 and Luke 18:30 to buttress his point about divorce.
The bishop’s sermon has sparked mixed reactions, with some agreeing with him, while others disagree.
