FAMILY OF FORMER FINANCE MINISTER KEN OFORI-ATTA PETITIONS INTERPOL TO REVOKE RED NOTICE
The family of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has formally petitioned INTERPOL to rescind the Red Notice issued against him, condemning the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) actions as a “premeditated vendetta” violating due process, constitutional rights, and international law.
In a statement released on Monday, June 9, 2025, the family accused the OSP of manipulating evidence to procure an arrest warrant against Ofori-Atta, which was issued on February 11, 2025, citing allegations of “using public office for private profit.” The family argues the warrant was obtained without a supporting affidavit and that no formal charges have been presented.
They further claim that Ofori-Atta’s designation as a fugitive was first announced through a media briefing without legal backing—a decision now under review by the Human Rights Court, with a ruling expected on June 18.
The family maintains that Ofori-Atta, who has been receiving treatment for cancer at the Mayo Clinic in the United States since early 2025, was scheduled for surgery on June 13. They assert the OSP refused his request for a video-recorded interview citing medical grounds, choosing instead to brand him a fugitive. The statement accuses the OSP of concealing medical evidence and ignoring offers of remote cooperation, resulting in what they describe as a “public lynching” aimed at humiliating him.
Legal proceedings have been initiated on June 3 challenging the legality of the arrest warrant and OSP conduct. The family also questions whether OSP disclosed Ofori-Atta’s medical condition and pending court processes to INTERPOL before requesting the Red Notice, arguing that failure to do so violates Articles 2 and 3 of INTERPOL’s constitution, which protect the right to health and forbid political misuse.
Summarizing their position, the family charged the OSP with weaponizing its mandate for political spectacle, citing procedural breaches, suppression of evidence, and violations of administrative fairness and human rights.
They affirmed, “Mr. Ofori-Atta has never fled accountability. He faced inquiries by CHRAJ, Parliament, and the ECOWAS Court—and was cleared each time. This is not justice; this is vengeance.”
The family concluded by assuring that Ofori-Atta will return to Ghana after treatment to cooperate fully with lawful investigations and is confident of his eventual vindication.
