Four men from Southeast England have been sentenced following their involvement in a large-scale drug smuggling operation, which saw 1,500 kilos of cannabis concealed in sacks of gari powder shipped from Ghana to the UK.
The individuals, Daniel Yeboah (54), Kristoffen Baidoo (48), Kwaku Bonsu (52), all from London, and Edward Adjei (48), from Grays, were found guilty after a three-week trial at Southwark Crown Court. The shipment, with an estimated street value of £4.3 million, arrived at Tilbury Docks on 19 December 2019.
Intelligence from the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Ghanaian authorities revealed that the seemingly innocent consignment of gari powder was hiding a significant quantity of illegal drugs, leading to the arrest and subsequent trial of the offenders.
The men now face lengthy prison sentences for their roles in the importation and distribution of drugs into the UK.
