GHANA PLANS TO EXPORT ELECTRICITY TO NIGERIA – Report

Ghana may soon be exporting electricity to its neighbour, Nigeria, according to latest reports.

This is partly due to Nigeria’s recent power grid breakdown. Financial sustainability and lower electricity prices top Ghana’s power sector agenda.

With over 200 million population, Nigeria rarely boasts of 5000 megawatts (MW) of power successfully generated, transmitted and distributed since the advent of grid electricity in the country till date.

Despite the unbundling and privatisation of Nigeria’s power sector, little improvement has been achieved, thus leaving the majority of the citizens to resort to dangerous alternative energy sources.

According to nairametrics.com, in 2023, Mr. Hanson Monney, the Head of the Generation and Transmission Unit at the Ministry of Energy in Ghana, conveyed this during his presentation in Lagos on the 2nd Day of the Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit.

Monney highlighted that Ghana has already achieved a remarkable 80% to 85% universal energy access within its borders through robust policy formulation and implementation.
