Oheneba Boamah Bennie, a journalist with Power FM in Accra who was arrested on February 9 to serve a 14-day jail term has been released.
The Poer FM presenter was fined a sum of 3,000 and also sentenced to a 14-day jail term in Nsawam by an Accra High Court Criminal Division.
His arrest came at the back of comments he made about President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo having influenced some justices of the Supreme Court after the declaration of the 2020 presidential election results.
His comment created the impression that President Akufo-Addo had met the Judges of the Supreme Court to influence the outcome of the 2020 election petition by giving them bribes.
The Attorney General posited that Bennie’s publication put the judges of the apex court in a bad light in the sense that they decide cases not independently but by taking directives from the President.
According to the A-G, if his comments about the judges if allowed to go unpunished, would amount to gross disrespect for the judiciary, which is a violation of the 1992 Constitution.
