GHANA CLOSES EMBASSY IN IRAN

Foreign Affairs Minister confirms diplomats safe as government cites security concerns

The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate closure of its embassy in Iran and the evacuation of all diplomatic staff amid escalating hostilities involving Israel and the United States.

The decision was confirmed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a social media post on Tuesday, March 2, 2026.

According to the Minister, the evacuation exercise was successfully carried out, with all Ghanaian diplomats safely relocated.

“I am delighted to announce that we have conducted a successful evacuation of all our embassy staff in Iran. The Ghanaian diplomats are safe and in high spirits. Ghana’s embassy in Iran is now closed sine die. The safety, welfare and protection of Ghanaians remains our utmost priority in these tempestuous times,” Mr Ablakwa stated.

The move comes in the wake of intensifying military exchanges in the Middle East, including reported U.S.-Israeli strikes and rising regional instability.

Government sources indicate that the decision to shut down the embassy indefinitely was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of Ghanaian officials and citizens amid growing security risks.

While the embassy has been closed “sine die”, meaning without a fixed reopening date, authorities say the situation will continue to be monitored closely.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to provide further updates on any additional measures concerning Ghanaian nationals in the region as the conflict unfolds.
