GHANA CONFIRMS TWO NEW MPOX CASES; TOTAL RISES TO FOUR
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported two more confirmed Mpox cases, increasing the total count of infections in the nation to four.
The recent cases were identified in the Greater Accra and Western Regions, as per a press statement released on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
In the declaration endorsed by Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Ag. The GHS Director General and health officials verified that the most recent cases do not have an epidemiological connection to the two infections reported earlier this month.
The relevant Regional Health Directorates have initiated contact tracing and other health interventions to prevent additional spread.
The GHS alerted the public that Mpox, a viral infection, transmits via close interaction with infected people, animals, or contaminated objects. “Typical symptoms comprise rash, fever, headache, muscle pain, back discomfort, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes,” the statement mentioned.
Health authorities advised residents to maintain consistent hand hygiene, steer clear of close interactions with symptomatic persons, and promptly inform the nearest health facility about suspected cases.
The Ministry of Health and GHS urged media organisations to assist public awareness initiatives by sharing precise information about Mpox prevention.
“The Government of Ghana remains committed to safeguarding public health. Drawing on our experience in managing similar outbreaks, we will continue to implement appropriate measures to protect the health and well-being of all residents,” the statement affirmed.
The most recent update comes after a previous press release on May 15, which announced Ghana’s initial two Mpox cases.
Health officials have promised the public that they are prepared to manage the outbreak, utilizing insights gained from previous responses to infectious diseases.
