The Beverage Consumers and Bar Owners Association of Ghana, popularly known as the Ghana Drunkards Association, has issued a directive to bar owners across the country to remain closed on election day, December 7, 2024.
In a press statement dated December 2, 2024, the association’s president, Moses Onyah, emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful and orderly environment during the polls. The directive mandates that all drinking spots, pubs, and bars remain closed from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on election day.
According to the statement, the decision is aimed at ensuring that consumers do not become intoxicated before casting their votes, which could lead to an increase in rejected ballots and disrupt the election process.
“This directive is to ensure that consumers do not get themselves drunk before going to the polls, to avoid the counting of rejected ballots and also ensure sanity at the various polling stations during the election processes,” the statement read.
The association called on both bar owners and beverage consumers to adhere strictly to this directive in order to contribute to a transparent and peaceful electoral process.
With just days to go until the highly anticipated elections, the call underscores the critical role stakeholders play in ensuring a smooth and fair voting exercise.
