The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially declared its support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of Ghana’s highly anticipated 2024 general elections.
This significant decision comes in the wake of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) disqualification of the GFP’s presidential candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada, on November 12. Kubi’s candidacy was invalidated due to errors and irregularities in his presidential nomination forms, a development that followed the tragic passing of the party’s original flagbearer, Akua Donkor.
Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, December 4, Jerry Addo, Deputy General Secretary of the GFP, explained that the party’s endorsement of the NDC was the result of extensive internal deliberations and consultations with party executives.
“We critically examined the manifestoes and policies of the various political parties and even the independent candidates,” Addo said. “That is why we have to arrive at this decision very late. It was not easy. We did extensive consultation. And you see, our mother, the [late] flagbearer, had women at heart.”
The endorsement reflects the GFP’s belief that the NDC aligns closely with their values and aspirations for Ghana, particularly in light of the late Akua Donkor’s advocacy for women and social welfare policies.
This last-minute alignment adds to the pre-election dynamics, with political observers noting that the GFP’s endorsement could influence key voter blocs, particularly in rural and grassroots communities where the party has established a following.
The NDC has not yet officially responded to the endorsement, but the move is expected to bolster its campaign as it seeks to unseat the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in what is shaping up to be a closely contested election.
With just days to go before the elections, the GFP’s endorsement adds another layer of intrigue to an already competitive political landscape.
