The Presidential Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama believes that the nation is now a poor representation of democracy.
During his second day visiting the Northern Region, ex-President Mahama expressed doubts about the impartiality of the Judiciary and the independence of state institutions.
He stated that this has resulted in worldwide dissatisfaction with the nation’s system of governance.
“Anywhere I go, the question people outside Ghana ask me is ‘Ghana, what happened to you? Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana, what happened to you?
“Everybody looked up to Ghana as the model of democracy, today, we are a bad model of democracy, our judiciary is not independent, all our state institutions have been destroyed, people looked up to Ghana as a country that is a model of economic management, today, our economy is in shambles,” he said.
Mr Mahama’s criticisms are occurring during the lawsuit between Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin and the Speaker of Parliament.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin began legal proceedings following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s announcement of four empty parliamentary seats.
The Supreme Court granted a temporary halt to Speaker Bagbin’s declaration. The Speaker responded by filing a lawsuit to challenge the Court’s decision that halted his declaration of four parliamentary seats being vacant.
The legal team for the Speaker contended, among other reasons, that the Supreme Court did not have jurisdiction over the case.
Nevertheless, following input from all sides, including the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the Supreme Court upheld its previous decision, declaring that the Speaker’s objection was not valid.
