GHANA TO ROLL OUT CHIP-EMBEDDED PASSPORTS FROM APRIL 28 – Foreign Affairs Minister

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has declared that Ghana will start distributing chip-embedded passports on Monday, April 28, 2025.

As stated by the Minister, the goal of implementing the new biometric passports is to strengthen passport security, remove the role of intermediaries, and increase transparency in the passport application process.

He mentioned that the Ministry is dedicated to providing a smooth, citizen-focused passport service that is available to all Ghanaians, while steering clear of issues related to third-party involvement.

The new program is included in a larger array of changes being introduced this year by the Ministry.

These consist of the launch of around-the-clock passport services, courier delivery of passports, electronic tracking options, and a 30 per cent decrease in application fees for passports.

The passports with embedded chips, currently utilised in multiple nations, contain biometric data within a secure microchip, providing improved defence against identity theft and fraud.

Mr. Ablakwa reiterated the government’s dedication to digitisation and public service reform, calling the implementation a significant milestone in modernising Ghana’s passport system.
