GHANAIANS IN NEW YORK PROTEST AGAINST PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO AFTER HIS UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY SPEECH

A group of Ghanaians living in New York held a demonstration on Wednesday, September 25th, in response to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s address at the UN General Assembly. The protesters at the Democracy Hub rallied for the prompt release of 42 arrested demonstrators.

Videos circulating on social media show protesters carrying signs demanding proper governance, an end to corruption, and a judiciary that is both independent and fair.

President Akufo-Addo is currently at the UN General Assembly addressing the issue of global emissions and climate change, emphasizing the importance of implementing worldwide measures for environmental preservation.

Their chants echoed their grievances: “Stop illegal mining in Ghana. Release the protesters now! Stop holding them without legal representation. Stop holding them without medical attention. Stop holding them without food and water.”

One protester exclaimed, Ghana’s president is involved in illegal mining, arresting protesters without legal representation and holding them for days without food and water. And he is here talking about environmental issues. Stop illegal mining!”

Currently in Ghana, there is tension as many criticize the protesters’ arrest and detention, with some falling ill and requiring hospitalization. Social media campaigns are being launched to demand the release of the protester, with the support of influential figures and celebrities.

The Ghana Police Service has verified that two out of the 39 protestors from Democracy Hub, which includes the leader Oliver Barker-Vormawor, are currently getting medical treatment at the Police Hospital because of health problems they encountered during their time in custody.

This comes after they were sent back following their involvement in a demonstration against unlawful mining and economic mismanagement.
