HARUNA IDDRISU DECLARES LGBTQ+ PRACTICES INCOMPATIBLE WITH HIS MUSLIM VALUES

Haruna Iddrisu, Ghana’s Education Minister-Designate, has firmly expressed his opposition to LGBTQ+ practices, citing conflicts with his values, religious beliefs, and the cultural ethics of Ghana.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, 2025, Iddrisu said, “It’s a cultural wrong. With my religion as a Muslim, you know where I stand on this matter. It is repugnant to my Muslim values and ethics.”

He underscored the importance of maintaining Ghanaian traditions and upbringing, saying, “I do not want to believe that many Ghanaian parents would want their children trained in a way that is inconsistent with how we were brought up as Ghanaians—that a man can relate to a man and a woman to a woman.”

Iddrisu’s comments come amidst heated discussions surrounding the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, a controversial piece of legislation aimed at addressing LGBTQ+ issues in Ghana.

Earlier, on January 14, President John Dramani Mahama met with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Accra to discuss the bill. During the meeting, the President proposed that the bill be introduced as a government-sponsored initiative rather than as a private member’s bill.

Mahama argued that government sponsorship would provide the legislation with greater legitimacy and improve its chances of passage through Parliament, signaling Ghana’s commitment to preserving its cultural and moral values.

The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill has sparked intense debate in Ghana, reflecting broader tensions between upholding traditional values and addressing global calls for inclusivity and human rights.
