I WILL NOT BE ON THE 2028 BALLOT – President Mahama Reaffirms Two-Term Limit
President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed he will not run for office in 2028
President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated that he will not run for office in 2028 and that he will stick to Ghana’s two-term presidential limit.
He said his decision to stay out of the campaign will bolster his determination to implement fiscal restraint and prevent the election-year spending cycle that has traditionally led to economic crises, according to a statement from the Presidency.
Speaking to Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during a three-day state visit, Mr. Mahama denounced the practice of incumbent governments circumventing fiscal safeguards in order to gain support from voters
“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” the President assured.
He listed the main economic benefits of his administration since he came back to power following a resounding victory in the 2024 election, pointing to a sharp increase in the value of the cedi and a sharp drop in interest rates and inflation.
Following repeated assertions by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he plans to run for a third term beyond his current and final mandate, Mr. Mahama made these remarks.
Enhancing economic relations and luring investment between the two countries were the main topics of the talks in Singapore.
