The government, according to Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, will not force the IMF program on the people of Ghana while the economy is in disarray.
On July 27, as MPs were wrapping up their discussion of the mid-year budget review, the Minister promised to ensure successful IMF negotiations and little suffering for locals.
“Mr. Speaker, I’d like to thank members of this session for the statement we made and especially for the contributions from the Minority side and certainly from our side, that as we go through the year, we will ensure that this engagement with the IMF is positive for the country and the country will be back on track,” Ken Ofori-Atta said.
At Monday’s Mid-Year review discussion, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu claimed that Ghanaians had little optimism from the budget.
“Mr. Speaker, without quick and wide economic development and an effective war on corruption, the Ghanaian economy is going to slip into a worse crisis,” the Tamale South MP remarked.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader, disagreed. He attributed the current state of the economy to the Electronic Transfer Levy Debate (E-levy).
