‘IT’S SAD; GLOVO IS LEAVING DUE TO HIGH TAXES, CURRENCY DEPRECIATION, HIGH FUEL’ — John Dumelo laments

John Setor Dumelo, the 2024 NDC parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wougon constituency in the Greater Accra Region, has reacted to Glovo’s decision to cease operations in Ghana effective May 10.

He places the responsibility on the introduction of greater taxes, the local currency’s decline against major international currencies, and the high price of fuel.

This, according to the prospective MP, is a setback to his efforts to attract investment and create jobs in the Ayawaso West Wougon seat.

“Glovo has its office in the Ayawaso West Constituency but it’s shutting down in a few days. It’s really sad that while I’m promoting my constituency to attract more businesses and create jobs for my youth, high taxes, depreciating cedi, and high fuel costs, among other things, are forcing companies to fold up. Things need to change!!!” he wrote on X on Tuesday, April 30.

Glovo stated in an email to its partner restaurants that it had taken the “difficult decision” to reallocate resources to its other international markets.

The Spanish firm has operations in more than 23 nations, but it has had difficulty turning a profit in Ghana.

“While we recognize the potential of the Ghana market, building a stronger position in the market and achieving profitability would require substantial investment over an extended period of time.

“This is why we have decided to redirect our resources towards the other 23 countries where Glovo operates, enabling us to better serve the millions of customers who use the Glovo app every day,” Glovo said in the email.

Glovo’s client app will not be accessible in Ghana after 10:00 p.m. on May 10 due to the exit.

The firm’s terms and conditions shall be followed for all unpaid invoices to vendors and restaurants.
