KEN OFORI ATTA IS NOT RUNNING FROM JUSTICE, HE’S RECOVERING FROM SURGERY – Wife Speaks
Professor Angela Ofori-Atta, wife of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, says her husband is not avoiding accountability but is currently undergoing treatment following prostate cancer surgery in the United States.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight on Monday, June 16, 2025, Professor Ofori-Atta said her husband had always cooperated with official investigations and would return to Ghana once he was medically cleared to travel.
“The Ken that we all know does not run away from accountability,” she said. “We saw that during the censure motion. He spoke publicly about his work. He has appeared before the courts and before CHRAJ. This is not someone who hides.”
Her comments follow public debate over a red notice issued by Interpol at the request of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) after Mr Ofori-Atta failed to appear for questioning in relation to an ongoing corruption investigation.
Professor Ofori-Atta explained that a biopsy conducted in March 2025 confirmed prostate cancer, leading to surgery on Friday, June 13, at the Mayo Clinic in the United States. She said all relevant medical information was submitted to the OSP by Mr Ofori-Atta’s lawyers.
“This wasn’t an attempt to delay the process,” she said. “We were transparent with the Special Prosecutor. They were informed that a biopsy would take place in March, and when the results confirmed cancer, the doctors scheduled surgery for June. That information was provided through proper legal channels.”
She questioned why a red notice was issued despite the medical reports and said her husband had offered to respond via video or through his legal team while recovering.
“Even during this stressful period, he said, ‘Let me respond by video. That’s allowed. Let my lawyers speak for me.’ So I don’t understand what is going on,” she said.
Asked if Mr Ofori-Atta would return to face the OSP in person, she said he would.
“Ghana is home. When he is well and the doctors give the go-ahead, he will come and answer any questions. But right now, he needs to recover.”
