The Member of Parliament for Akyem Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has called for a complete reform of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) internal election processes following its loss in the 2024 general elections to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement, Kennedy Osei Nyarko advocated for the abolition of the current delegate system used to elect party leaders, proposing instead that all registered card-bearing members be given the opportunity to participate in regional and national elections. He emphasized that the only internal elections the party should retain are those for flagbearer and parliamentary candidate (PC) positions, while scrapping elections at the national, regional, and polling station levels.
To rebuild the party and regain the trust of Ghanaians, he also proposed a shift to a volunteer-driven system. Under this approach, campaign teams would be directly appointed by the flagbearer or PC and supported by mobilizers and volunteers at the grassroots level.
“The above proposals, if implemented effectively, have the potential to eliminate or minimize the monetization of our internal elections completely. It will also create a sense of responsibility and belongingness among all party members and sympathizers,” he noted.
Kennedy Osei Nyarko also stressed the importance of running the party as a professional organization, with a dedicated administrator and supporting staff managing its operations.
This call for reform comes amid widespread criticism of the NPP’s governance under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, with many party members and analysts attributing the electoral loss to public dissatisfaction. The MP’s suggestions aim to address the perceived disconnect between the party’s leadership and its grassroots members, while ensuring efficiency and inclusivity in future campaigns.
The proposals have sparked a debate within the party, as members seek solutions to reposition the NPP for future electoral success.
