The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, has strongly refuted allegations of distributing food to voters during the special voting exercise held on Tuesday, December 2, 2024.
Speaking to the media, the MP dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated, emphasizing her commitment to integrity. “The campus security guard in the viral video claiming to have received rice and oil from me is an NDC executive. They keep tarnishing my image, but not anymore,” she stated.
Lydia Alhassan reaffirmed her dedication to ethical practices in her political career, noting that her achievements and development projects in the constituency speak for themselves. “I have come too far to engage in any act that would tarnish my reputation. My work is evident, and my constituents know what I stand for,” she said.
The allegations stem from reports that Alhassan and her team were seen distributing food packs to voters at the Legon Police Station, one of the designated polling stations for the special voting exercise. The reports have fueled a heated debate, with critics accusing the MP of vote-buying.
John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, was among the first to condemn the alleged act, describing it as a violation of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) regulations. Dumelo’s remarks have added to the tension in the constituency, which has been a hotspot for one of the most competitive parliamentary races in the 2024 elections.
Despite the controversy, Lydia Alhassan remains resolute, urging constituents to focus on her track record rather than what she termed “unsubstantiated claims.” The incident underscores the high-stakes nature of the election season, where allegations and counterclaims often dominate the political landscape.
