Ohemaa Woyeje, a well-known Ghanaian DJ and media personality, has counselled women not to give up on their careers in order to get married or have children.
She thinks a woman’s ability to advance professionally or better herself shouldn’t be impeded by marriage.
In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, the broadcaster made this observation: after getting married and starting a family, some women don’t put in as much effort or do as well in their careers.
Ohemaa Woyeje, real name Harey Adjoa Yeboah Asiamah Kusi, asserted that women do not have to give up their jobs simply because they are married, especially if it is to satisfy their husbands. This is true despite the challenges of juggling a career and a marriage.
“Women could thrive with the right support system even after getting married, and must not see marriage as a limitation to what they can offer. Some women quit their jobs after getting married, and others become less competitive after childbirth, but they must rise above that,” she said.
In order to lessen the strain of managing both at once, she recommended that they make use of support networks.
“We must not limit our abilities because of conflicting roles. We could equally utilise the right support systems that can keep us going while taking full responsibility for all aspects of our lives. It’s difficult doing so many different things at the same time, but with determination, you can manage to find your way in outlining your schedules properly to fulfil your passion and meet all tasks,” she added.
