MEDIKAL NAMED AMBASSADOR FOR NATIONAL YOUTH AUTHORITY’S ‘RED MEANS STOP’ DRUG CAMPAIGN

George Opare Addo, the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, said that Medikal has been named ambassador for the National Youth Authority’s campaign against youth use of the synthetic substance known as “red.”
On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, George informed Parliament that the appointment was meant to exploit the musician’s popularity to spread the anti-drug message to Ghana’s youth, particularly those who are at danger of substance misuse.
“In a strategic move to enhance the campaign’s appeal and credibility among the youth, the National Youth Authority has appointed renowned Ghanaian musician Medikal as an official ‘Red Means Stop’ ambassador. Medikal’s significant influence among young Ghanaians through his music and social media presence makes him an ideal advocate for substance‑free living,” he said.
Medikal will promote a drug-free life through public appearances and online interaction, he added, acting as a visible role model. This includes supporting advocacy training and mobilisation initiatives, participating in school outreach programs, and incorporating “Red Means Stop” themes into performances and music videos.
According to Mr. Opare Addo, the National Youth Authority has taken steps to bolster the battle against substance misuse in addition to the ambassadorial appointment.
According to recent research, tens of thousands of young people in Ghana are impacted by drug use and misuse, making it a serious problem for the country’s youth.
There are an estimated 50,000 drug users in the nation, with about 35,000 of them being students between the ages of 12 and 35. Among the substances being abused are alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, and synthetic opioids; risky combinations like “Red” have become more prevalent.
Many first-time users start experimenting in their mid-teens, and about four out of ten senior high school students and over four out of ten college students report having experienced drug use.
Long-term addiction, behavioural issues, absenteeism, and memory impairment are all associated with substance use.
The “Red Means Stop” campaign is a component of a larger national initiative run by the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment to encourage young people to lead healthier lifestyles and increase awareness of the risks associated with opiate consumption.
