MY MOTHER ASKED ME TO QUIT MUSIC OVER ONLINE TROLLS – Wendy Shay

Ghanaian Afrobeat sensation Wendy Shay has opened up about how relentless cyberbullying nearly forced her to abandon her music career.

Speaking in a revealing interview on the Afrobeats Podcast hosted by Adesope Shopsydoo, Wendy described herself as “the most bullied musician in Ghana,” recounting how the harsh trolling she endured particularly in the early days of her career took a toll not only on her but also on her family.

“At a point, my mum asked me to quit music and return to Germany because the trolling was overwhelming and it affected everyone in my family,” she disclosed.

According to the ‘Survivor’ hitmaker, her family’s reaction was understandable, given the nature of the online abuse. Many critics accused her of trying to copy the late Ebony Reigns, and others went as far as distorting her photos to mock her appearance.

“Imagine they take your face, edit it to make you look like an old woman, and start mocking and laughing at you. They even said I wasn’t talented enough. It was crazy. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy, but it built me,” she added.

Despite the emotional and psychological strain, Wendy noted that support from close friends, fans, and mentors kept her grounded and motivated to push through.

Since breaking into the industry in 2018 under RuffTown Records, Wendy Shay has won several accolades, including honors at the Ghana Music Awards and 3Music Awards.

Her latest single, ‘It’s Too Late,’ is gaining massive traction globally, topping music charts and receiving widespread praise from fans and media outlets alike.
