NAMIBIA SWEARS IN FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT

Namibia made history on Friday as Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was sworn in as the country’s first female president, marking a significant milestone for gender representation in African politics. Nandi-Ndaitwah, 72, who won November’s election with 58% of the vote, now faces the daunting task of addressing high unemployment, inequality, and poverty while navigating the expectations that come with being only the second directly elected female president in Africa.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s inauguration is a landmark achievement for Namibia, a country that has been led by the South West Africa People’s Organisation (Swapo) since gaining independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. A long-time loyalist of Swapo, Nandi-Ndaitwah joined the liberation movement at the age of 14, dedicating her life to the fight against white-minority rule and the advancement of her nation.

In her first remarks as president, Nandi-Ndaitwah acknowledged the weight of her new role. “If things go well, then it will be seen as a good example,” she told the BBC’s Africa Daily podcast. “But if anything happens, as it can in any administration under men, there are also those who would rather say: ‘Look at women!’”

Namibia continues to grapple with the lingering effects of apartheid, particularly in wealth distribution and land ownership. Despite Swapo’s efforts to improve the lives of the black majority, disparities remain stark.

“Truly, land is a serious problem in this country,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said in an interview ahead of her inauguration. “We still have some white citizens and, more particularly, absent landowners who are occupying the land.”

Her administration will also need to tackle pressing economic issues, including an unemployment rate of over 30% and widespread poverty. These challenges are compounded by global economic uncertainties and the need to attract foreign investment while ensuring equitable growth.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s political career spans decades, during which she has held various ministerial positions, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation. Her experience and deep roots in Swapo have positioned her as a unifying figure capable of steering Namibia through its current challenges.

As she takes office, Nandi-Ndaitwah’s leadership will be closely watched, not only by Namibians but also by advocates for gender equality across the continent. Her presidency represents a significant step forward for women in African politics, following in the footsteps of Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first directly elected female president.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s administration has pledged to prioritize land reform, job creation, and social equity. Her ability to address these issues while maintaining political stability will determine her legacy and the future trajectory of Namibia.
