NEW MEDIA ASSOCIATION OF GHANA DENIES RECEIVING FUNDS FROM MINISTER FELIX KWAKYE OFOSU AFTER COURTESY VISIT

The New Media Association of Ghana (NMAG) has strongly denied widespread allegations circulating on social media suggesting that its executive members received hefty cash sums following a recent courtesy call on Honourable Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister in charge of Government Communication.

The Association, in an official statement released on April 7, clarified that the primary purpose of the visit was to formally introduce the newly elected executives of NMAG to the Minister and to explore potential collaborations between the government and the digital media community particularly in combating misinformation and fake news.

“It is important to place on record that no monies were received by any executive member of the Association, nor was any financial commitment made to the Association at large during or after the said meeting,” the statement emphasized. “Claims suggesting that executives were given GHC100,000 each or that bloggers are being paid GHC20,000 monthly are entirely false, misleading, and without merit.”

This clarification follows a viral Facebook post by a user identified as Nana Yaw Akwaboa, who accused Honourable Felix Kwakye Ofosu of unfairly distributing funds to bloggers while party communicators allegedly received significantly less. The post read, “Why would you pay bloggers 20,000 a month and party social media communicators 1,000 cedis? Honourable Felix should respect the party guys,” and was further amplified with an additional claim referencing GHC78 billion in old currency.

NMAG described the allegations as “baseless” and “unfortunate,” especially at a time when the Association is working to unify digital media players across the country and raise ethical standards in the industry.

The group, which represents bloggers, online journalists, and digital communicators in Ghana, reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and cross-sector collaboration. It also called on the public and all political communicators to refrain from spreading misinformation that could potentially derail national development efforts.

“We urge the public and all party communicators to refrain from spreading misinformation that only serves to create division and undermine genuine efforts toward national development,” the Association concluded.

NMAG extended appreciation to Honourable Felix Kwakye Ofosu for his willingness to engage with the Association and expressed hope for a continued, mutually beneficial relationship in support of Ghana’s digital communication agenda.
