NPP MOVES TO EXPEL FORMER MINISTER FRIMPONG-BOATENG OVER BLISTERING PUBLIC CRITICISM
Party cites "reprehensible" comments that violate its constitution after ex-minister called current NPP "fake"

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated internal disciplinary proceedings that could lead to the expulsion of former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng. This follows his scathing public critique of the party’s current state and leadership.
The party’s action stems from an interview Prof. Frimpong-Boateng granted on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, January 12, 2026. In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP described the former minister’s conduct and public utterances as “highly reprehensible and inimical to the values, unity and integrity of the Party.”
During the interview, the renowned surgeon made a series of damning allegations. He declared the current NPP a “fake” version of the party he knew, stating it no longer reflects its founding values. He specifically targeted the party’s internal democratic processes, alleging that the election of its most recent presidential candidate was marred by “intimidation, bribery and manipulation of delegates.”
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng linked these alleged irregularities to the party’s electoral defeat, warning that failing to address these issues and re-electing former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer would lead to a “trainwreck.” While stating his critique was not personal, he argued that Dr. Bawumia being a “very nice person” was insufficient for national leadership at a critical time.
The NPP statement asserts that the former minister’s comments undermine party cohesion and violate its constitution, necessitating the disciplinary process. It remains unclear how swiftly the process will advance or if Prof. Frimpong-Boateng will formally respond to the charges. The move sets the stage for a significant internal confrontation within the ruling party.
