ORGANISED LABOUR SUSPENDS NATIONWIDE STRIKE

Organised Labour has suspended its much-anticipated nationwide strike slated for Thursday, October 10, 2024.

The choice was approved at an urgent meeting on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, where union leaders evaluated the circumstances and decided to cancel the strike.

The decision was made after the government assured to address illegal mining. Organised Labour pointed out that the government has made significant efforts, such as increasing the Operational Halt campaign, led by the Ghana Armed Forces, to address illegal mining in forest reserves.

During a press conference, Joshua Ansah, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, stated that the choice was made for Labour to monitor the government’s execution of these actions.

The strike, supported by different unions, aimed to push the government to address illegal mining (galamsey) and other urgent problems.

Initially, Organised Labour intended to go on a never-ending strike to pressure the government into declaring a state of emergency and increasing actions to tackle the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
