During his appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz, musician Okyeame Kwame called on President Akufo-Addo to take strong measures to stop illegal mining, also referred to as galamsey. He stressed that galamsey is causing harm to the country’s water sources, mentioning recent demonstrations and public opposition to end the activity.
Okyeame Kwame brought to the president’s attention his pre-office commitment to risk his presidency in order to address the galamsey problem. Before the upcoming election in only three months, the musician wondered why the president hasn’t addressed the critical condition of Ghana’s water bodies, which now look like ‘Milo’ because of extreme pollution.
He urged President Akufo-Addo to give a command to stop all galamsey operations right away, along with harsh penalties for anyone who disobeys. Okyeame Kwame suggested that the president could be hesitant to take action for fear of losing votes, but encouraged him to prioritize the nation’s well-being above political concerns.
Okyeame Kwame noted that by utilizing his executive power, the president can require stakeholder interactions to discover a lasting solution. He reiterated the importance of air and water for human survival, and emphasized that the issue of Ghana’s water bodies should be tackled without political bias.
“Let’s set aside NPP and NDC, and let our love for Ghana guide us in solving this problem,” he passionately urged.
