PARLIAMENT NEEDS BOTH SIDES — Kennedy Agyapong Calls For Cooperation Amid NPP-NDC Stand-Off

Kennedy Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong has voiced his concerns regarding the growing chaos in Ghana’s Parliament, where a significant conflict between the majority and minority parties has arisen, questioning both the Speaker of Parliament and the power of the Supreme Court.

At the heart of the crisis is a deadlock regarding the parliamentary majority, which Agyapong worries could threaten the country’s stability if not addressed with cooperation and mutual respect.

During a media briefing, Agyapong voiced concern regarding the recent behaviours of New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, who have chosen to boycott sessions following the National Democratic Congress (NDC) claiming majority control in Parliament.

Regardless of a Supreme Court decision intended to resolve this, the NDC maintains its majority, heightening tensions. Agyapong called for a resumption of collaboration, emphasizing the importance of MPs from all parties putting national interests ahead of party affiliations.

“If we can’t find a middle ground, it’s the people of Ghana who will suffer,” he warned. “NDC MPs have to ask themselves how they plan to govern, should they win the next elections. Parliament needs both sides to function, and we can’t lose sight of that.”

Citing historical examples, Agyapong highlighted former Speaker Aaron Mike Oquaye’s firm measures when an MP aimed to contest as an independent, resulting in the seat being declared vacant. He remarked that these actions highlighted the importance of parliamentary attendance and involvement across party affiliations, as required by Ghana’s constitution.

Agyapong warned against transforming this parliamentary stalemate into a politically charged event, urging all parties to remember the potential dangers.

We can’t allow politics to destabilize the country,” he stated firmly. “The stability of Ghana is more important than any party’s agenda.”

Additionally, he urged the media to cover the matter without bias.

“The media has a role here. Taking sides will only deepen the divide. We need the press to keep things balanced, to remind us of our responsibilities, not to add fuel to the fire.”
