Ghana’s Parliament has publicly released a list of 28 Members of Parliament who repeatedly failed to attend sittings without official permission during the first quarter of 2025.
The attendance audit, which covered 43 sittings held between January and March 2025, revealed concerning levels of absenteeism among the legislators. Some MPs missed more than 20 sessions, with Joseph Frempong, the MP for Nkawkaw, recording the highest number of unauthorized absences at 22 days.
The list, published by the Parliamentary Service, names the MPs alongside the exact number of sitting days they missed. Notable figures on the list include Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson (Ajumako/Enyan/Essiam) with 17 absences, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (North Tongu) with 14, and former Majority Leader Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (Asawase) with 8.
The publication is expected to reignite public debate on the enforcement of parliamentary attendance rules and the need for stricter sanctions, as provided under Article 97(1)(c) of the Constitution and Parliament’s own Standing Orders.
The full details of the report are expected to be debated by the House. The disclosure has already prompted calls from civil society organizations for stronger measures to curb absenteeism and uphold parliamentary responsibility, ensuring that elected representatives are present to perform their core legislative and oversight duties.
