Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, has stirred controversy with her remarks on the proposed privatization of Ghana’s energy sector. The suggestion, recently put forward by Energy Minister-Designate John Abdulai Jinapor, has reignited discussions about resolving the sector’s growing debt crisis, which threatens the country’s economic stability.
Speaking on her platform, Vim Lady expressed support for privatization but emphasized the need for accountability within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). She called for the dismissal of officials accused of corruption and inefficiency, warning that their continued presence could lead to the collapse of the sector.
“There are far too many instances of prepaid meters going unaccounted for, and someone has to answer for this,” she remarked.
Vim Lady also took a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its handling of a similar privatization effort during its tenure. She accused the former administration of attempting to bypass procurement laws to benefit close associates.
“Instead of following proper procurement processes, they wanted to hand over the ECG to their cronies like Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko and his associates under the guise of privatization,” she alleged.
Under Ghana’s procurement laws, companies interested in acquiring state entities must submit competitive tenders, with contracts awarded to the best bidder. Vim Lady stressed that the NPP’s alleged plan violated these rules.
“The rules are clear: every company must present a bid, and the one offering the best terms wins. But the NPP wanted to secretly sell off the ECG to their friends for personal profit,” she stated.
The ongoing debate over privatization highlights the urgent need for reforms in Ghana’s energy sector, with differing opinions on how best to address the mounting challenges.
