OUT OF 100 FEMALE SEX WORKERS, 45 TEST POSITIVE FOR HIV – NACP Reveals

The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) has expressed concern over the rising number of HIV infections in Ghana, with recent statistics indicating an unusually high rate among the population, such as female sex workers, men who have sex with men, and transgender women.

Caroline Adonadga, Head of Prevention, Counselling, and Nutrition at the NACP, revealed that recent testing results indicate a serious public health issue.

According to her, around 26 out of every 100 men who have sex with men test positive for HIV, and approximately 45 out of every 100 female sex workers tested are HIV-positive.

She also disclosed that around 48 out of every 100 transgender women who were tested had HIV.

“When you take female sex workers, out of 100 tested, about 45 test positive for HIV. For men who have sex with men, about 26 out of 100 test positive, and among transgender women, about 48 test positive,” she stated in an interview on Channel One TV, Friday, January 9, underscoring the need for critical attention to the issue.

Ms. Adonadga emphasised that HIV is still common across all demographic groups and warned that the numbers indicate a larger national problem rather than just isolated populations.

“These statistics show that Ghana is facing a generalised epidemic. HIV is present among children, adolescents, and adults, wherever you go,” she said.

She advocated for increased testing and counseling services, strengthened preventative measures, and sustain ongoing public education, especially for high-risk groups in order to stop the spread of the virus and lower the number of new infections across the country.
