SHORTAGE OF 10 PESEWAS COIN AFFECTS PRICE OF SACHET WATER IN EASTERN REGION

Due to a lack of 10 pesewa coins in Koforidua, most sachet water merchants are unable to cut their pricing; instead, they must maintain the retail price at 50 pesewa, even though many would prefer to sell at 40 or less.

The inability to obtain small-denomination coins has emerged as one of the most annoying obstacles in day-to-day commerce, street merchants told the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday.

Many vendors clarified that although consumers frequently asked for a reduced price, they were unable to provide precise change.

“People want to pay 40 pesewas, but we don’t get the 10‑pesewa coins anywhere,” one vendor said. “If a buyer gives you one cedi, how do you give the right change? That is why the price remains 50 pesewas.”

Despite stability in the wholesale price of sachet water, the scenario has maintained fixed retail rates.
