SPORTS MINISTRY SETTLES BLACK QUEENS’ OUTSTANDING BONUSES; $9,000 PAID TO EACH PLAYER

The national women’s football team receives long-awaited payments from their 2024 WAFCON campaign, resolving a dispute that had threatened their World Cup qualifier against Egypt

The Sports Ministry has finally settled outstanding bonuses owed to the Black Queens, with each player receiving $9,000 for their third-place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The resolution came on Tuesday night following Ghana’s decisive 7-0 aggregate victory over Egypt in the 2026 WAFCON qualifiers. Each player was presented with a cheque at their Erata Hotel base, though Joy Sports reports that $500 was withheld as tax from the original amount.

The payment ends a tense standoff that saw players threaten to boycott Tuesday’s crucial qualifier, having already missed two training sessions to press their demands. The team returned to training only after intensive negotiations with sports officials.

Despite the financial distractions, the Black Queens delivered an impressive performance, thrashing Egypt in Accra after previously winning 3-0 in Ismailia. The victory secured Ghana’s qualification for next year’s continental championship.

The team is expected to break camp on Wednesday, October 29, before reconvening in late November to prepare for a high-profile friendly against England on December 2. The bonus settlement removes a significant distraction as the team builds momentum toward the 2026 WAFCON tournament.
