SUPREME COURT VERDICT DISRESPECTS THE AUTHORITY OF PARLIAMENT – Ransford Gyampo

Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo believes that the Supreme Court’s rejection of Parliament Speaker Rt Hon Alban Bagbin’s application undermines Parliament’s authority.

In a phone interview on the Joy News Morning Show, Prof Gyampo expressed that the Supreme Court’s actions have made parliament seem less important.

“I was surprised the Speaker’s application was thrown out in a manner that disrespects the authority of Parliament and fostered the attempt to make Parliament quite subservient to the judiciary”. He said.

Prof Gyampo believes that when identifying where sovereignty lies within the branches of government, parliament should be given precedence over all other institutions.

He clarified that in Ghana, judges are not elected unlike in other countries where they are held accountable to the people; stating that parliament is the sole government branch offering genuine representation.

The Senior Lecturer argues that Ghana’s sovereignty can be attributed to the legislative branch of government as it allows for full representation of the Ghanaian people, so it is unjust to undermine parliament’s authority in favour of other government branches.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday October 30, 2024  dismissed an application by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who sought to overturn the Court’s ruling that suspended his declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.

This follows an initial suit filed by Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, challenging the Speaker’s declaration.
