IGP YOHUNO REVERSES DAMPARE’S KEY POLICY LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER TAKING OFFICE
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has made a big change to one of the policies of the former IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. He took this step soon after he started his new job.
When Dr. Dampare was in charge, he decided that all police announcements had to come from the headquarters in Accra. This rule meant that local police officers in different regions and districts couldn’t speak to the media on their own.
The goal was to make sure messages were clear and to prevent any mix-ups. But some people didn’t like this decision because it made local police less independent.
They worried that this rule could make things too slow, especially when quick decisions were needed in emergencies.
IGP Yohuno has now decided to go back to the old way of letting regional offices handle their own communication. He believes this will allow them to work more freely.
During a workshop for public relations officers at the Detective Training School in Accra, IGP Yohuno highlighted the need for teamwork in fighting crime.
“In times when the public demands greater involvement and accountability in our service delivery, a well-tested approach ensures police legitimacy and boosts public confidence.
This is where your significant role as public affairs officers in fostering positive interactions with the public becomes essential and directly impacts police effectiveness.”
He also stressed that the media plays a crucial role in these efforts and shapes how the public views the police force.
“It is on this premise that the current police administration under my leadership will reactivate and invite all regional police public affairs offices to re-engage and meet the evolving demands of our society and media partners.”
The Inspector General of Police called on officers to be watchful and maintain professionalism in their work.
By doing so, they can help the public understand their efforts better and motivate citizens to get involved in community activities and initiatives.
