WE SUSPECT ELECTRICAL FAULT BUT THERE’S INDICATIONS THAT IT WAS A DELIBERATE ACT – GNFS On Kantamanto Fire

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has indicated that an electrical issue or arson might be the potential origin of the destructive fire that swept through Kantamanto Market in Accra on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

The blaze, which ignited at approximately 1:19 a.m., obliterated more than 100 stores, causing distress among merchants.

The GNFS reports that initial inquiries indicate the fire could have resulted from defective electrical connections, which are a frequent problem in the industry. Nonetheless, the chance of arson has not been dismissed.

Public Relations Officer Alex King Nartey stated, “We suspect electrical faults, but there are also indications that this could have been a deliberate act. An investigation is ongoing to establish the facts.”

The blaze destroyed inventory valued at millions of cedis, as distressed vendors appealed for government assistance.

Firefighters encountered difficulties reaching the blaze because of barriers. This obstructed their attempts to extinguish the fire quickly.

Mr. Nartey highlighted the pressing requirement for enhanced fire safety protocols in markets nationwide.

He remarked that old infrastructure and insufficient equipment hinder efforts to manage fires of this scale.

“We need more logistical support and modern equipment to deal with emergencies effectively,” he added.
