President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the immediate necessity to tackle inefficiencies in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as a part of wider initiatives to stabilize and enhance the nation’s power sector.
During a meeting with a World Bank delegation at his private office in Accra on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Mahama proposed reconsidering the privatization of ECG’s operations to enhance private sector efficiency in electricity distribution.
“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to have a major problem with our whole power value chain,” Mahama stated.
“Going ahead with privatising the last point of electricity distribution, bringing in private sector efficiency, is something that we want to take up again.
“We want to speak with the World Bank to get the expertise to be able to do that.”
He stressed that privatization might be a crucial move in addressing enduring issues that have troubled the company, such as operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and poor service delivery.
“It’s not just about privatization for its own sake,” Mahama clarified.
“This forms part of a broader strategy to modernize and enhance the performance of our energy sector.”
