WOMAN REARRESTED FOR BURNING 7-YEAR-OLD GIRL’S PRIVATE PART WITH HEATED SPOON FOLLOWING PUBLIC OUTCRY

The Nima Division of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) has rearrested 24-year-old Ayisha Zakaria for allegedly burning the private part of a seven-year-old girl at Mamobi in the Ayawaso North Municipality.

Zakaria was rearrested on Wednesday, less than 48 hours after her release from police custody, following the withdrawal of the case by the complainant, Sarki Musah Umar, a community youth leader.

Her release sparked widespread public outrage on social media after a video of the alleged abuse went viral, prompting DOVVSU to reopen the case.

Eyewitnesses told police that Zakaria heated a metal object—believed to be a spoon—and pressed it against the victim’s genitals as punishment for bedwetting.

The incident came to light after school authorities noticed severe burns on the child and reported the matter to the police.

Zakaria was initially arrested last Thursday, but the case was withdrawn on Monday after the complainant cited financial constraints and pressure from community leaders.

The case has drawn strong condemnation from the public and religious leaders.
During a lecture at the Hamburg Mosque in Mamobi, Imam Abdul Razak Iddriss called for national intervention and justice for the victim.

The Imam also revealed that GH¢2,000 had been raised to support the victim’s treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Following renewed public pressure, DOVVSU confirmed Zakaria’s rearrest and detention pending further investigation.

Police sources say the case will now be handled as a serious criminal offence under Ghana’s Domestic Violence and Child Protection laws, with prosecutors expected to file fresh charges in the coming days.
