CHAIRMAN WONTUMI HOSPITALISED, UNDERGOING TREATMENT – Lawyer Confirms

Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Receiving Medical Care Amid EOCO Probe

The lawyer representing Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi and Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has confirmed that his client is currently hospitalised and receiving medical treatment following his recent arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi disclosed that Wontumi had been battling flu symptoms even before his detention, which initially prompted a request to postpone his interrogation at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

“He has had the flu since last week and was already receiving treatment, which is why we initially requested a postponement of his CID interrogation. He is still not fully recovered and is currently at the hospital,” Appiah-Kubi said.

The lawyer later confirmed that Chairman Wontumi’s condition warranted formal hospitalisation. This clarification came amid widespread confusion about his whereabouts, with the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Communications Director, Paul Yandoh, stating earlier that the party had no formal updates on Wontumi’s status and could not verify his location.

Yandoh also expressed concern about missed medication doses following Wontumi’s arrest, given his prescribed treatment regimen.

Appiah-Kubi assured that arrangements had been made with EOCO to ensure Wontumi receives the necessary medical care while the investigation proceeds.

Chairman Wontumi was apprehended by EOCO on Tuesday, shortly after attending questioning at the CID headquarters in Accra over undisclosed allegations. Though EOCO has not officially commented, sources suggest the probe relates to alleged financial transactions involving the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.
