Former President John Dramani Mahama has raised serious allegations against Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), accusing it of aiding the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a bid to rig the December 7 general elections. With less than 24 hours to the polls, Mr. Mahama expressed his concerns in a social media post, where he emphasized the determination of Ghanaians to safeguard their ballots and ensure change.
According to the former President, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reported instances of exposed validating stamps to the Electoral Commission since Thursday night. However, he claimed the EC has failed to issue clear directives to prevent its staff from disclosing critical information about these stamps.
Mr. Mahama argued that such lapses could pave the way for tampering, as the exposed stamp details could potentially allow the production of counterfeit stamps to give fake ballot papers an appearance of legitimacy.
He also pointed to an internal memo allegedly dated October 10, 2024, which he claimed reveals a calculated plot by the EC to facilitate ballot stuffing by exposing the serial numbers of the validating stamps ahead of election day.
The NDC’s flagbearer has called on key stakeholders, including the National Peace Council, religious and traditional leaders, civil society groups, the international community, and election observer missions, to intervene and hold the Electoral Commission accountable.
As the nation prepares for the polls, Mahama’s allegations add tension to what is expected to be a closely contested election. The Electoral Commission is yet to respond to the accusations.
