In a coordinated effort, officials from the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) located at the Akanu Sector Command, together with the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, have seized a truck carrying cocoa beans that are purportedly being trafficked out of the nation.
The intelligence-based operation resulted in the interception of the truck with license plate AS 2103-W at the Ave-Havi border checkpoint.
The car, operated by Ibrahim Fatawu, was discovered to hide 1,115 gallons of cocoa beans, believed to be on their way to Togo.
This update was announced in a press release signed by Michael Amoako-Atta, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration responsible for Public Relations, and sent to the Ghana News Agency on Sunday in Accra.
As per the statement, the seized cocoa beans have been transferred to representatives of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for additional proceedings.
The vehicle has been seized, and the driver is helping with inquiries.
The Ghana Immigration Service took the chance to deliver a strong warning to those engaged in or considering smuggling activities.
“The Ghana Immigration Service is hereby issuing a caution to all would-be smugglers to desist from such activities, as they negatively affect Ghana’s economy and lead to a loss of revenue for the government”
